Lockheed Martin UAS: Stretching the limits

By: Sakha Pramod
Lockheed Martin’s unmanned technologies enable their systems to go farther, operate longer and succeed in harsh or dangerous conditions. Within these systems are elements that make them smart – and ultimately help users make intelligent decisions.
“The products we highlight at UMEX here for the unmanned aerial systems primarily include the Fury, the Desert Hawk and the Indago Quadcopter,” says Steven Fortson, Business Development Manager, Lockheed Martin Unmanned Systems. “Fury is a long-endurance, survivable Unmanned Aerial System that brings strategic capabilities to the market. With the largest payload capacity and volume among runway-independent UAS, and its advanced heavy fuel propulsion system, best in class power generation, and low signature design, Fury is capable of supporting any Intelligence, Surveillance Reconnaissance and IEW requirement. It is the Best Value Aircraft for ISR and IEW,” he told the Nation Shield in an interview.
“We also have the Desert Hawk. The combat-proven Desert Hawk small unmanned aircraft system (SUAS) is designed to conduct real-time aerial surveillance with operational ease, mission flexibility, and tactical portability. The advanced Desert Hawk with extended endurance can be still hand launched and is easily transportable in a back pack,” Steven Fortson says to Nation Shield.
“Lockheed Martin’s new waterproof Vector Hawk addresses a broad set of unique missions and operating needs within a single system. With a gross takeoff weight of only four pounds and a vertical profile of only four inches, Vector Hawk boasts best-in-class payload capacity, speed and endurance. It is fully waterproof and can fly in rain, and winds or snowstorms and is ideally suited for maritime environment,” according
to him.
“One of the systems we are selling quite profusely here is the Indago Quadcopter. Indago sets apart from the rest in that because of the range and endurance,” he says. With its leading endurance and quick deployment ability, Indago offers advanced security solutions and an eye-in-the sky in just minutes. The UAS, along with its payload options and advanced ground control software, helps users to accomplish diverse missions including precision agriculture, firefighting, first response, and mapping, surveying
and inspections.
At  UMEX, Lockheed Martin has unveiled VCSi – commercial software that enables operators to simultaneously control dozens of unmanned vehicles and conduct information, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. “VCSi is the culmination of more than two decades of experience and 1.5 million hours of operational use,” he says.
VCSi is a safe and reliable software platform that can be adapted to any vehicle, from one you can hold in your hand, to a 50,000-pound machine; from a vehicle that flies for a few minutes, to a vehicle that flies for months at a time.
